What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is a metric developed by Ahrefs that shows how strong a domain's backlink profile is. The score ranges from 0 to 100 and provides an indication of a website's overall link strength and authority. The higher the DR, the stronger and more reliable the domain is usually seen in terms of link building.

Important to know: Domain Rating, like Moz's Domain Authority (DA), is not an official Google ranking factor. It is an Ahrefs tool for comparing domains.

How is Domain Rating calculated?

Ahrefs calculates DR based on:

  • The number of referring domains that provide backlinks to the site.
  • The quality and strength of those domains (a backlink to a strong domain counts more heavily).
  • The distribution of link value across the web.

If a domain receives a backlink from a strong domain with a high DR, it can significantly improve the score.

Why is Domain Rating Important?

Although DR has no direct influence on Google's algorithm, it is useful as a comparison tool. It helps you to:

  • Analyzing competitors: how strong are their link profiles compared to your site?
  • Prioritize link building: backlinks from domains with a high DR are often more valuable.
  • Monitoring progress: an increasing DR may indicate a growing and stronger link profile.

Domain Rating vs. Domain Authority vs. Domain Trust

It's important to understand the differences:

  • Domain Rating (Ahrefs): In particular, measure the strength of the backlink profile.
  • Domain Authority (Moz): looks at the chance to rank based on links and other factors.
  • Domain Trust (Majestic, or conceptual): Emphasises the reliability and credibility of the links.

None of these metrics are official Google factors, but together, they provide a useful picture of your domain authority and link profile.

Domain Rating Limitations

A high DR score does not guarantee high rankings. For example, a domain with a high DR can still have bad or irrelevant content. A low DR website with strong niche content can also score well. Ultimately, quality, relevance and EEAT signals remain the decisive factors.

Conclusion

Domain Rating is a useful metric from Ahrefs for measuring the strength of a backlink profile and comparing domains. It helps with competitive analysis and link building strategies, but should always be placed in context: a high DR is valuable but no guarantee of SEO success.
