H6 Tag

What is an H6 tag?

The H6 tag is the sixth and final heading level in HTML.
It is used to specify the most detailed subheadings within a web page — subordinate to the H5.

In HTML, it looks like this:

<h6>Jouw subkop op zesde niveau</h6>

The H6 tag is rarely used in regular web texts, but can be valuable in very comprehensive documents, such as technical manuals, encyclopedias, or knowledge bases.

Why are H6 tags important?

The H6 tag is the final part of your headline hierarchy.
Although it has no direct SEO impact, it does help to store content to logically structure the deepest level.

For readers, the H6 offers extra clarity in complex or step-by-step explanations.
For search engines, it ensures consistency in the HTML structure — something that helps you understand your page semantically.

Bottom line: the H6 isn't necessary for every text, but it's useful if your content goes multiple layers deep.

H6 tags in practice

You only use an H6 when the structure of your text really requires it. For example:

<h1>SEO guide 2025</h1>
<h2>Technical SEO</h2>
<h3>Improving Core Web Vitals</h3>
<h4>Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)</h4>
<h5>Image optimization</h5>
<h6>Using modern file formats</h6>

Here, the H6 provides an extra layer within a specific part of technical SEO.
In practice, this mainly occurs with manuals, product documentation or deeply structured knowledge articles.

H6 tags and SEO

The H6 tag has no direct influence on rankings.
However, it contributes to a clear and semantically correct structure, which is indirectly beneficial for SEO.

Google uses the hierarchy of headlines to understand context and make connections between topics.
A page that is neatly organized from H1 to H6 shows that the content is well organized and that attention has been paid to logical structure — a sign of quality.

In addition, the right structure ensures a better user experience, which indirectly improves the performance of your page.

How often can you use an H6 tag?

There is no limit to the number of H6 tags, but they only belong under an H5.
Only use them if the content really requires it.

A guideline: Most web pages rarely require more than one or two H6s.
With too many hierarchical levels, the text becomes unclear rather than organized.

H6 tags in WordPress

In WordPress, you can easily add an H6 tag by choosing “Heading 6” in the editor.
Make sure the head structure is correct: an H6 always belongs to an H5, not directly to an H3 or H4.
Optionally, use an SEO plugin to check that your page is technically well structured.

Rank Rocket tip

Use H6 tags sparingly.
They are useful for highly structured information, but often add little to normal SEO content.
Only add them when you notice that your text really needs an extra level to maintain an overview.

As a rule of thumb, if you need H6s to structure, it's often better to split your text into multiple pages or sections.

My advice

The H6 tag is not a must, but it is a tool for extremely detailed content.
Use it consciously and only when the content asks.
A clear structure is more important than a deep hierarchy.

The best SEO texts are clear, logical and easy to read — not a technical exaggeration.
Keep it simple: use H1 to H4 for most pages, and use H5 or H6 for exceptional cases.
