Organic traffic

What is organic traffic?

Organic traffic is the number of visitors who reach your website via unpaid search results in search engines such as Google. Unlike paid ads (SEA or Google Ads), you don't click for this, but earn visibility through search engine optimization (SEO).

For example, when someone searches Google for SEO specialist Eindhoven and your website appears at the top of the results without you advertising it, that user's click counts as organic traffic.

Why is organic traffic important?

For many companies, organic traffic is the most sustainable source of visitors and leads. Namely, it is:

  • Cost efficient: you don't pay per click like ads.
  • More reliable: Users often trust organic results more than ads.
  • Sustainable: A well-optimized page can keep attracting traffic for months or even years.

That's why SEO is a long-term investment that brings in new customers over and over again, without having to continuously use a media budget.

How do you measure organic traffic?

You can easily measure the number of organic visitors with tools like Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console.

  • In GA4, you can find organic traffic under Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition, where you can filter by channel Organic Search.
  • In Search Console, you can also see which keywords and pages you are organically found on, including click and impression data.

How do you increase organic traffic?

As an SEO specialist, I work with a combination of strategies to grow organic traffic:

  1. Keyword research: gaining insight into relevant search terms and search intentions.
  2. On-page SEO: optimizing titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links and content.
  3. Technical SEO: ensure that the site is fast, mobile-friendly and easy to index.
  4. Content marketing: publishing valuable content that meets the questions and problems of your target group.
  5. Link building: building authority with quality backlinks and referring domains.

Difference with paid traffic

With paid traffic (SEA/Google Ads), you buy your visibility with ads and pay for each click. With organic traffic, you earn your position through content and optimization.

The big difference: once you stop advertising, paid traffic drops out immediately, while organic traffic continues as long as your page is relevant and well optimized.

Conclusion

Organic traffic is the basis for sustainable online growth. It shows that your website is found based on relevance and reliability, without depending on advertising budget. By structurally investing in SEO, you build a stable stream of visitors that often provide the highest ROI in the long term.
